And Molly's favorite part of our beach trip was...

the five-minute pony ride! I shouldn't be too surprised -- it would have been my favorite part of the trip at age 4 as well. This farm also has a petting zoo, so the kids got to meet a llama, sheep, goats and a deer.

The pony ride included two laps around the ring, and on the first pass the kid leading the pony said of Josh, "He sure does know a lot of information." I'm sure the kid learned more about sperm whales and dolphins in that five minutes than he ever wanted to know.

This long-haired goat was so desperate for attention that it let Josh check out its teeth.

We took the kids on the "Dolphin Cruise & More" last night, and the "& More" turned out to be pulling in a crab trap and throwing nets to catch fish. Here the kids are arguing over who gets to throw the big hermit crab that came up in the crab trap back in the water. One guess as to who won.

We ran straight to our garden when we got home today to see what had transpired, and we were shocked to find this gigantic zucchini! Apparently there was a lot of rain here while we were gone.

More Hilton Head

We headed to Savannah on Tuesday, only to find the city a bit like an oven. It was more than 100 degrees, and we were all wilted after about 20 minutes. One restaurant on the water had a great marketing ploy -- water misters outside the restaurant.

The kids got some relief from the heat in this fountain in downtown Savannah

At least Ethan was excited about playing miniature golf. Josh and Molly warmed up to it, although Molly used a "sweeper" method of playing that involved more pushing the ball with the club than hitting it. Congratulations to Chris for beating all of the adults!

Hilton Head 2011

We're back in Hilton Head for vacation, this time with Chris' family. I cringed when Molly wanted blue ice cream after dinner at the Salty Dog, but she seemed to enjoy it!

She dances to her own music

The big day finally arrived: the dance recital! After shelling out lots of dollars for this costume, recital fees, etc. we got to watch Molly on stage for about five minutes. I also attended the dress rehearsal yesterday, so I had the pleasure of watching about three hours of little kids' dance routines this weekend. For all of you who have attended dance recitals, you know how fun this can be!

Molly's class danced a tap routine and a ballet routine. They were possibly the most uncoordinated routines I've ever seen, but I'm happy to say that Molly kept going, with enthusiasm, the whole time. As you can see in the pictures, almost every girl is doing a different dance move.

Molly was thrilled with her flowers (thanks Gran and Grandad!) and trophy, although once again I had to explain to one of my kids that the trophy they received was for participation, not because they were better than all of the other kids. As for the rest of us, we are glad that it will be another year until the next dance recital!

We have video too, which I'll post as soon as I figure out how.

Promoted to Second Grade!

Josh rushed in the door after his last day of first grade today to make sure of one thing: that the "promoted to second grade" box was checked on his report card. We didn't realize there was any question on this!

This has been an outstanding year for Josh. He received the highest marks in all areas on his report card, including the troublesome "takes care of materials" (i.e. keeps his desk clean) category that has plagued him since his first year of kindergarten. We're so proud of how he's progressed, and even though there is still a lot of work to be done, it has been great to see him finally coming into his own.

He was really sad when he got off the bus today, although not because I accosted him with the camera! His teacher, Ms. Bean, is leaving Charlotte this summer to pursue her PhD at UNC Chapel Hill, and Josh had a hard time saying goodbye to her today. Luckily, I'm always happy to take a road trip to Chapel Hill, so we've made plans already to take Ms. Bean out to dinner in the fall.

Last Day of Preschool 2011

I'm about a week late posting this, but here's our annual last day of preschool photo for Molly. We had the bushes removed that the kids usually pose in front of, so this time we have the scenic front door and tricycle in the background.

This was a real "last" for us. After eight years at this preschool, I have switched Molly to another preschool for her last year for a variety of reasons, including no longer wanting to start my day navigating a giant church parking lot full of SUVs. Luckily, the kids there who Molly has become attached to will attend the same elementary school, so she will rejoin them in kindergarten in 2012.

It was a bittersweet ending. I was sad to say goodbye to Molly's teacher and to a place that has become very familiar to us. However, I'm excited about the new school and very excited that she starts kindergarten in 15 MONTHS. That day cannot get here fast enough!
